If anyone could come close to Duncan Edwards in regards to determination and bravery on the pitch then it would be Bryan Robson.
Rejection as a youngster at a trio of League clubs, he came to the fore with West Bromwich Albion, ironically a mere handful of miles from Dudley, before following Albion manager Ron Atkinson to Old Trafford for a record breaking £1.5m transfer.
Wearing his heart on his sleeve throughout his 434 game United career, it was only fitting that he would guide his team to their first League triumph in season 1992-93, not to mention scoring the final goal in that momentous campaign.
Legend is an often used word that few deserve, but it is certainly not so in the case of Bryan Robson.
The mere mention of Alex Stepney’s name conjures up that 82nd minute save from Eusebio in the 1968 European Cup Final at Wembley.
A save that knocked the wind out of the Benfica sails and gave the inspiration to his United team mates to go on to fulfil Matt Busby’s dream in securing that coveted trophy. Whilst on another day, he will be remembered as the penalty converting goalkeeper from the Docherty era.
A Londoner by birth, but for years now a fully-adopted Mancunian, Alex Stepney was a more than reliable goalkeeper, despite winning only one full England cap, with his 535 United appearances following his record breaking £55,000 transfer from Chelsea confirming this.
